Christmas Time is Here!!

As I sit here watching "The Nativity Story" on TBS, I can't help but think about how close Christmas is and I'm not ready for it yet!! I still have to buy a couple more gifts for my brothers, do laundry, go to work, and squeeze in a haircut/eyebrow wax. Disappointingly, the weather was pretty bad out this morning, so I had to miss church again. Hopefully, the weather will hold up so I can go home on Tuesday. Today I wrapped my parents' present as well as my Aunt/Godmother, and my grab bag gift for one of my family members. I still have to wrap a couple more presents and then I am set for home.

The fall semester came to an end last week and finals went pretty smoothly. The week before brought a lot of snow and bad weather, which I had to dig out my car a couple of times and we missed three days of class, which would have been riding time for me but unfortunately, I won't be taking another horse class during Spring semester, with much relieve to my mom, but not so much to me since I have an unending passion for horses. I am continuing with my Liberal Arts degree so I have something to do until my lease is up.

I am now on the Troubles with Roommates list at Campus View and have talked to the Property Manager about my problems. After I came home from Thanksgiving break, I got a new message from a girl who also wanted to switch. We contacted each other and met in the office but were informed that we had to talk to our roommates first. She ended up backing out, but my roommate and I agreed that we don't want to live with each other anymore. We had another opportunity to switch, but the people we were switching with were guys and my parents don't want that happening even though I thought the guy was well mannered and laid back. Oh well, in the end I had to back out, so I went to my Property manager again and spoke with her privately and told her what the problems were. So we agreed that after winter break, we would meet again and see what solution we could come up with.

Well, I guess that is all that is new with me. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas...which is now becoming a controversy, but I will say it anyway, have a Merry Christmas and a very happy and safe New Year!!!

Bad Weekend with a Strong Message

You may have noticed that I put on a new picture in my account. This is a horrible picture of me with my favorite horse at Kirkwood, Kheonna. She was one of Sylvia's horses that she donated to Kirkwood and I love her to death!

Now, I have had one of the worst weekends I have personally had in a long time. My roommate had her boyfriend over again, but this time they didn't spend time in her room, they spent time in our living room. Friday night I came home at 2 AM,(ok, it was Saturday morning) and they were sitting on her futon talking, no big deal. They put the futon down and slept. Saturday night I came home from work at 11:40ish and they were doing it on the futon!! That is definitely not a sight I wanted to see when I walk into my apartment after work. When I get home from work, I want to relax, watch TV, surf the net for a while, and then go to sleep. Not this time. I walk in to see her guy's bare bottom fully exposed and she got even friskier when she saw it was me. Earlier this week, my microwave broke and it has been taken in to get fixed, but she doesn't want to chip in or take any responsibility for it even though she was the last to use it in the few days before it broke. NO, she is blaming me and making me pay for it all. The main reason this is bugging me is because I found out all this information on her Facebook status conversations with her friends.

What is the message you may ask? It is a message of appreciation, relief, and what I could have been like. This popped into my head a couple hours after I got home last night when I was finally able to wind down and go to bed. I realized that I am not her. You may think "well DUH!!!" But it made me appreciate the fact that the way I was raised, the people around me, and where I grew up makes me the respectful, responsible, hard-working person that I am today. I grew up on a hog farm in Britt, Iowa. My brothers are both autistic amongst other things. My mother is an epileptic, who just got her driver's license back. :) My family is really close knit with my other relatives. I was raised with a religious background as a Catholic and through my religion I have learned to give selflessly and volunteer, even when I don't really feel up to it. All of these factors has given me my good morals that I have today, makes me really view the way people act around others, and reflects on the way I approach people. I don't sleep around, go out partying, do drugs, smoke, or drink alot. I don't give people false hope, I'm honest and give honest advice. I try to give people advice that I live by. I am just so glad I am who I am.

I really want to say thank you to my mom and dad for raising me the way they did and for being great examples. They did a great job. To my brothers for being who they are. To my relatives for being good examples of what to be and what not to be. To God for providing me with such people and helping me to make good decisions. To my past roommates for being the greatest people to live with. And lastly and strangely to my current roommate now for showing me what I am not and what I could have been! Betcha didn't see that one coming, but I am SO glad that I am not you!!

In other news: Sylvia ended up getting a bacterial infection in her lungs and couldn't come to the show, but the weekend was a great success anyway, even though it wasn't the best way to give me the message. Hahaha.

Well, I had better get to bed so I can go to my apartment complex's office to see about changing roommates or moving to a single. I'll keep you guys posted!!

Time For A Change

Hello all! This is the same Iowa Horsegirl posting, I have just decided to change the title of my blog because I just didn't like my long title anymore and this one seems more familiar to me. This name also has a meaning special to my heart as Gold is in loving memory of my collie, Goldie, who died a couple of years ago and still holds a special place in my heart. Her picture is still on my cellphone so I get to remember her everyday and I miss her a lot...it was especially sad because I didn't get to say good-bye. Riley is my older dog who I still love to play and cuddle with whenever I go home. Now he has Mugsy, our 5-month old St. Bernard puppy, to play with. I feel bad for him because Mugsy easily overtakes him so he has to fight for our attention. But he can still hold his own.

Classes have been keeping me really busy. I finally got my tuition situation figured out so I have been able to breathe a little more easy this past month. Midterms are over and I haven't checked my grades yet, partly because I'm kinda scared to! Ok, not really, I know where I am at in my classes and am doing well in all of them. I am doing an hour of service learning for my Children's Lit class and it has been a blast! One of the highlights of my week is going to Kirkwood Kids to read and play with the three-year olds, especially when the kids behave and listen to you. Today, one of the kids whom I get along with extremely well and read to a lot bit me in play and wouldn't apologize, so he had to sit in time out while the other kids got to spend their outside time playing. He ended up sort of apologizing, but I had to go so I took it. Oh well, maybe next week will be better.

I am still working at Beahr Ridge Arabians whenever I have no homework and the weather allows. For now the weather has been really good, except for my hometown, but I will get to that later. I went a couple of weeks ago and the assistant trainer and I got six horses worked! It was a great day and we make a very good team. I went today, and we only got two horses worked, but they were horses who needed a little more attention and I had to get back to Cedar Rapids to run some errands. I had the chance to ride Kingslee again today, but didn't because one of the horses that I was lunging today pulled the rope through my hands and I wasn't wearing gloves and the rope kinda bit into my fingers. So I knew that I would have to grip the reins and hold Kingslee's face to get him back into frame, and leather would only irritate my fingers more, so I skipped on the chance. I do hope that I get another one. We made progress with the horse I was lunging though. The horse, Rose, went into a canter with the assistant trainer on her without my help, which is huge progress.

This weekend is the Arabian Spooktacular Fall Show here in Cedar Rapids and Beahr Ridge is going. I will be helping as well as working at McDonalds. So it will be a busy weekend. Hopefully I can get a little sleep in between jobs. Sylvia just got back from the US Arabian National Championships, which she got Top Ten in Ladies Western Side Saddle with Autumn Storm V+/ aka Dude. Now she has a bad cold and maybe the flu, so we are hoping she gets better before the Fall Show. I still love working there and will probably move to Cedar Falls next year to be closer and maybe attend UNI, but nothing is a sure thing. If I can find a good job with horses somewhere, who knows where I can end up, but that is my plan for now.

I will try to update my blog more often, but I think I already said that previously, but I WILL try. Until next time...chao!!

Not This Year...Bummer

Yesterday I got some bad news from Sylvia and I will not be going to Canada.

I had just got done saddling a horse when she asked me if I would like to go with her and her sister, Sharon for lunch. Before we left, she told me that she had a major problem and it was driving her crazy. I asked her if it was about me and she nodded. I thought I was in trouble, and started to get nervous. She told me that she was really stressed out with getting Sharon and her daughter Ashley situated, which was putting pressure between her and her husband, and something happened with her younger stallion, Khasabi. Even before she said it, I knew she was hinting at me not being able to go to Canada with them.

We went into the lounge for more privacy and she told me that the farm that Khasabi is at has one horse in quarantine. Even though it is only the one horse, who doesn't have a contagious disease unless it breeds or something similar to an STD in humans, and the rest of the barn can be shown in the US, the entire barn has been labeled under quarantine and is not able to show outside of the US. Yes, that means that Khasabi will not be going to the Canadian Nationals, as well as the entire barn, including 5 other clients who have paid entry fees, stall fees, hotel, etc. Since I would only be needed for setting up the stall area and packing the trailer, it would be unnecessary for me to go for only 2 horses.

She had a really hard time getting this out, and we looked at each other and I said, "There's always next year." With that, she started to cry with relief and we hugged. Seeing her cry made, me tear up, and she was so thankful that I understood. Even though I am a little disappointed, there is always next year and I can now go home to the Britt Draft Horse Show.

So I will be helping Ashley and Sharon with stalls, working horses, and general upkeep of the farm while Sylvia is gone. I am thinking about telling the scheduler at McDonald's to schedule me, but I would also like to spend some time with my family and go to the State Fair with them. So we'll just see what happens.

Summertime

It has been quite a while since I have posted, so I thought I would catch everyone up on what has been going on...

My internship at Beahr Ridge Arabians went great!! In fact, I am still working there every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Right now I am cleaning stalls, going to shows as a groom, prepping horses for workouts, and working/learning on a finished show horse named Kingslee, who is a Canadian National Champion. How amazing is that? Not everything has been picture perfect though, but that will come in a later blog. To summarize, we have gone through Sylvia getting hurt, people being fired, and new people coming in. It sure has been interesting, but the environment is great and the people are really nice when they aren't creating drama!! I really like it there, and hope to get some much needed experience out of it for future jobs.

I graduated out of the Horse Science Program at Kirkwood, but am still going to stick around for another couple of semesters and take up Literature. I will also be taking Training 1 again so I can get back into shape and get my confidence back. On Wednesday, I will go home to get my Dependency Verification form signed and to play with Mugsy, my family's new St. Bernard puppy.

Getting Mugsy was my...get ready for this...MOM's idea. She saw a picture of his siblings at Hardee's in Garner and fell in love with it. So she grabbed a number and the rest is history because she and I know that my dad can't say no to dogs, or about any other animal. He is so cute and they brought him home the day I came to visit. Too bad I had to leave for work!!

I am still working at McDonald's, but have had to cut my hours in order to work at Beahr Ridge. But the paycheck is still there and is pretty consistent. I work on the weekends and Tuesday. We have gotten a few new high schoolers, a couple of whom give true meaning to the phrase "dumb blonde". Oh well, the others make up for them pretty well.

Right now my new roommate is moving in and, to my surprise, it was just her and her boyfriend. Hmm, normally I see parents helping out on moving day to give advice and see who they will be living with for the next year or so. So far she seems nice. She just graduated high school and that is about all I know about her. Hopefully that will change in the next couple of days.

Today is my day off from both jobs and I usually like to just lounge around doing nothing, which is what I have been doing, but after church, I went to Kohl's to get a new shower curtain and ended up getting a new rug to go along with it. I LOVE the rug, but the curtain looked so much better in the package. Maybe it will grow on me, but if it doesn't, I can always get a new one. I like color and the last theme was green and blue. This time it is blue, tan, black, and white/grey.

Well, that is about sums it up. The last couple of months have been crazy, and I have a feeling they are going to get crazier!!! Oh well, it'll keep things interesting for next time.

What a Relief!

I got some releiving news from home today. My cousin is now out of the hospital! My mom said that they scoped her and found a piece of meat lodged in her esophagus and they had to get it out. That is why she couldn't keep anything down.

You may be puzzled here. How can someone not be able to feel any pain with that problem? My cousin is mentally disabled. She can't communicate with us like a normal person. Her caretakers have to read her body language, facial expressions, and she does some gestures to what she wants and doesn't want. But we all love and care for her unconditionally, and she knows it and loves us back.

Internship, Etc.

Here I am, still sick with the flu and kinda tired. Beahr Ridge Arabians had a silent horse auction on Sunday, and didn't sell any horses. But on the brighter side, about 50 people braved the weather to come and see the clinic and horses. We have now gotten one of the horses sold, whom nobody really thought would sell, and sold a couple of horses before the auction so that is kinda good. I got very little sleep over the weekend, since I still had to work at McDonalds until late and had to beat the snowy weather to get to the barn. I ended up staying at Comfort Inn Suites and had a two-bedroom suite all to myself. Needless to say, I got a lot of sleep that night!!

Work is still really hectic and I ended up leaving early because I started vomiting. My coworkers told me I shouldn't have come in at all, but my manager pissed me off earier, so I went in anyway. One of the closers is living with the married managers so she is mainly closing for me, and I must say she is a terrible closer, but if they want her to close instead of me, then so be it.

Lent is almost over and I have tried to be good this year, but I already ate meat on a Friday, and my promise to read the bible and workout everyday has been broken several times. Oh well, there is always next year!! I will be going home on Saturday and am very excited to see my family again!!

Some bad news that I recently found out, my cousin is in the hospital for the flu and dehydration. She is mentally handicapped, and her weight has dropped. Yikes huh? She is normally skinny because even though she eats a lot, she is also very active despite her physical and mental setbacks. I hope everyone who reads this will keep her in their prayers!

Catching Up

Last week was the end of the first eight weeks of spring semester. I had forgotten that fact until I heard people worrying about their Horse Nutrition finals. I have been using this week to catch up on my studies in other classes before I begin my internship at Beahr Ridge Arabian Stables in Cedar Falls. Since I didn't have time after Med Term class to really buckle down and study, my grades have slipped and I am barely hanging on. But I am sure that this week will really help me. I have worked really hard and am making some serious progress. On Saturday I will head home for Spring Break, stopping at Beahr Ridge on the way so I can get a couple of hours in and Sylvia, the owner and head trainer, can have a chance to see where I am in my abilities. I hope I make a good impression, but I know that I am a good rider and I REALLY want to get back in the saddle.

Monday, my mom, whom some of you may know on this blog as Hejlikwoman, and I are going to go shopping and it is my birthday. Then on Wednesday, I will leave home to continue my internship since I will not have to worry about going to work afterward. I am so excited to start my internship, and am looking forward to getting a lot of experience out of it.

My job at McDonalds is going steady, I will have to cut hours, but I don't mind. I am pretty much the only person who actually cares about getting the work done first and talking later. I close about every night and the nights that I am supposed to get off early, I normally stay late to help the closers catch up because I actually know what needs to be done. I also do it very neatly instead of just half-assing it just to say it's been done. On Monday, I was so far behind that I didn't get my dishes back until an hour after the store closed. This happened because the girl who got called in just wanted to talk to the manager in between orders instead of asking me what needed to be done. Oh well, hopefully this break is what I need.

Long Time, No See...Er Blog!!!

Second semester if fully underway and my classes are keeping me really busy!! My schedule for this semester is the following:

Monday:
Training II- 3-3:50pm.

Tuesday:
Medical Terminology- 12-1:50pm
Training II- 3-3:50pm

Wednesday:
Training II- 3-3:50pm

Thursday:
Medical Terminology- 12-1:50pm
Training II- 3-3:50pm

Friday:
Intro to Math- 9-10:50am
Training II- 11-11:50am

I know what you're thinking...it doesn't sound that bad. So in let me explain what is required for each class.

For Training II I am in charge of catching my assigned horse, Kheonna, and preparing her for class which consists of brushing her off, wrapping her legs, and tacking her up. This takes about 40 minutes since she is currently modeling her winter coat and she lays down to sleep at night, which gets her pretty dirty. After riding her for about 50 minutes, she is really sweaty and hot, so before she goes back outside, I have to dry and cool her off. This takes about an hour since the sweat makes the dust on her coat get really crusty and it can be hard to brush off after she is dry.

Medical Terminology is a little easier. I go to class and take notes, quizzes, and all that jazz. But it consists of a lot of homework and remembering all the medical terms can be hard. Homework takes about an hour and I try to study about an hour/day which really helps.

Intro to Math has been rocky. I have only been to two classes because the first day of class was really cold and my car was having problems so I decided to be safe rather than sorry. The second missed class I was sick. That and it is a morning class and I am NOT a morning person at all!! Also my professor, who is really good at her job as teacher, is really rude to the students and is narcissistic. Two traits that I could definitely live without in the morning!!!

Adding work from 6-close, which is roughly midnight, adds to the chaos and only allows me the wee hours of the mornings and after I get out of bed to do my homework.

Well, now that I have given the exhaustive update of the happenings in my life, I have a few pieces of good news that have been going on recently.

First, I have worked one hour of my internship so far. I am going to be interning at Beahr Ridge Legendary Stables, which is where Kheonna is from and Sylvia, the owner/head trainer, forgot that I was coming the day after I spoke with her on the phone! I told her that I would arrive around 2-2:30ish and I kept my word. She just forgot so she wasn't at the farm when I arrived. I ended up working about an hour cleaning the arena walls and left at 4:30 and went straight to work.

Second, my cousin had a baby boy on Feb. 5. He came a couple weeks late and was 8lb. 5 oz and 20 inches long. She named him John Andrew and my mom and I are wondering what his older sister is going to think when she sees him getting more attention from us.

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow....YUCK!!!

Today is the first day of the second semester at Kirkwood, and it's snowing like CRAZY!!! It started around 11:00AM and it is still going strong. I still have to go to work today none-the-less, and I really can't wait to go. The past few days since I have been back in Cedar Rapids I was working at the Kirkwood Open Horse Show and those days ended with huge sinus headaches. So I ended up going home early and crashing after taking some Benadryl.

Today is also the first day that the McCafe will open in the store that I work in and my manager has made me promise to hold off on the coffee until after work. Hahaha. I guess I will be a good girl and hold onto that. I wonder what other changes have been made to the store and if any people have come or gone. My manager has already told me that one of the closers has been fired over the break because she no-called;no-showed more than three times.

Right now I am watching Dr. Phil and hoping that I have the day off tomorrow so I can watch the Biggest Loser and see the hot, sweet trainer, Bob Harper, lose his temper at one of the contestants. I am a member of his website and he says we are all going to crack up since he usually doesn't do that. lol If I don't get it off, it won't surprise me but I will still be sad. Oh well, I'll catch it on youtube.

I guess I'm going to try and catch some z's before work, I'll try and update later.
